Google stats suggest Edinburgh is Scotland’s healthiest city in lockdown

Research carried out by The Juice Guru suggests Edinburgh may be Scotland’s healthiest city in lockdown.

The Juice Guru analysed Google search behaviour in the UK’s 30 most populated cities for key health trends across three categories (exercise, wellness and healthy eating) and found the most searches in Scotland originated in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh’s top four searches were yoga, running, HIIT and the Paleo diet, while Glasgow, which ranked 4th in the UK overall, mostly searched for Keto Diet and Running, Resistance Bands and Low-carb Diet, and Mindfulness, with its least searched word being yoga.

The figures make Edinburgh the UK’s second healthiest city during lockdown in terms of Google searches.

Top 10 Cities Overall

  1. Bristol
  2. Edinburgh
  3. Liverpool
  4. Glasgow
  5. Peterborough
  6. Coventry
  7. London
  8. Leicester
  9. Belfast
  10. Newcastle

This research was carried out with Google Keyword Planner using 12 popular lockdown health trends.

The Juice Guru used forecasted data for the next month which takes into account the popularity of terms in the previous month, as well as year-on-year. The team then calculated the number of searches per 10,000 citizens to ensure a balanced result across all cities.

“Despite the difficult circumstances we’ve all had to adapt to, it’s encouraging to see so many people still prioritising their health and looking for new ways to stay healthy in both mind and body,” says Lee Turner, director of The Juice Guru.
