How to bronze up this Summer without damaging your skin

We explore safe, sustainable tanning as a healthier alternative to sunbeds or hours spent under the sun

Sunbeds can have a negative effect on the health of our skin and cause premature ageing, as well as sunburn. Ultimately, the result is dull and dried-out-looking skin. Self-tan is, by far, the healthier option for achieving a gorgeous, glowing tan but it can be tricky to get right.

We teamed up with the tanning experts at That’so to find out how to create the perfect glow while keeping our skin nourished and looking healthy and hydrated. They shared some of the benefits of fake tanning along with their top tips…

The benefits of self-tan

Self-tanning is a lot safer for your skin – there are so many risks to using sunbeds, such as sun burn and premature ageing of the skin. Using a self-tan will help you get a gorgeous, glowing tan which, although it may not give as long lasting effects as a sunbed would, your skin will thank you for. Your skin wil be in a lot better condition than it would using regular sunbeds.

Self-tan costs less – going to the sunbeds can cost approximately £10 a session and can cost more if you buy acceleration creams or any additional products whilst you are there. To build up a tan, you may find you will need to go on a couple of sunbeds a week.

However, with a self-tan, your bottle of tan will provide multiple uses over a couple of months and the cost will be a lot less costly.  By also investing in an exfoliator and moisturiser for your tan, this can allow your tan to be even more long lasting and for you to get more from your self-tan bottle.

What’s great with many of our That’so products is that they can also be used on the face – saving you money on purchasing a separate tan for your body and face!

Instant tans are instant! – a big plus for self-tans! If you are heading out on the town last minute or have a special event to attend, you don’t need to think about building up a sunbed tan over a number of weeks or months beforehand, you can simply apply the product their and then all over your body or to specific areas on show for and instant sun-kissed look.

Self-tan means less maintenance – With all types of tan, it’s important that you exfoliate regularly to get rid of dead skin cells on your skin and that you moisturise to keep your tan looking its best and long-lasting. But sunbed tans require a bit more maintenance than this, because they require regular trips to the sunbed salon to keep the tan topped up and avoid it from fading.

With a self-tan, if the tan does start to fade, you can with some products top this up with more product or exfoliate the product off and start a fresh tanning application from the comfort of your own home at a time that works best for you without having to travel to a sunbed salon.

At That’so we have products which allow for ease of application, such as our That’so Tan Extender Scrub, which gently exfoliates with the action of coconut shell, removing impurities and dead skin cells, preparing the skin for a flawless and longer lasting tan.

Our On-The-Go Hemp tan also contains 100% natural tanning formula, which gives an even tan that fades naturally with no patches.

How to create a natural, safe tan

What used to be seen as a benefit to using sunbeds was that the tan achieved looked a lot more natural than that of a self-tan. But tanning product formulations and ingredients have improved greatly over the years and there’s a wide range available to help you achieve the tan you desire.

For example, at That’so we have our Special Edition On-The-Go Dark Hemp Tan and Nature Tan Intense Bronze for those who want a more intense, look and for those who want a more natural look, we have our Gradual Tanning Moisturiser, or Nature Tan Light Bronze that can be used for a lighter, natural and golden looking glow.

Our Nature Tan includes active ingredients including Hyaluronic Acid, which moisturises intensly and gives compactness, brightness and elasticity to the skin whilst visibly reducing wrinkles and signs of ageing.

It also contains Panthenol to moisturise and give the skin depth, elasticity and firmness, as well as DHA (Dihydroxyacetone), which guarantees a gradual and long-term tan without causing any damage to the skin while giving a bright and intense colouring to the skin that decreases with exfoliation without leaving spots.

All tanning products from That’so are vegan and cruelty free.
