Also referred to as body hygiene, personal hygiene is an essential aspect of wellness because it prevents disease-causing germs and parasites from multiplying and can also affect the health of those around you.
There are many different ways people may choose to maintain their hygiene. You can choose your methods and products to develop your own routine.
Research has shown that a bath, at least every other day, is required to maintain a satisfactory amount of hygiene. While your personal preference may dictate the frequency of showers, it’s recommended that you’re consistent with it because showering helps you rinse off the dead skin cells, bacteria, etc.
You should also make sure to shampoo about twice a week because it helps you remove any skin build-up and protects against any oily residues, which can act as potential irritants for your skin.
Trimming your nails regularly keeps them from accumulating germs and dirt. By keeping them short and clean, you’re also preventing germs from entering your mouth.
Remember to avoid biting your nails because it transfers all the germs from your nails to your mouth.
Alternatively, there are a lot of products available for you to help you clean your nails.
You can use an orange stick (also called a cuticle stick), to remove any build-up under your nails, for example. You can also use a nail brush to scrub off any dirt from nails.
This is probably the most talked-about topic under body hygiene. But good dental hygiene extends further than just having white teeth.
Dentists suggest taking care of your gums too and notice any changes so that you can prevent gum diseases and cavities.
You can maintain your dental hygiene by brushing at least twice a day, every day, for about two minutes each time. Of course, you could brush after each meal too.

Taking care of your hands
Hands are most prone to the accumulation of dust and germs. These pockets of germs and bacteria can enter our body through any orifice, such as the mouth, nose, eyes, or ears. Thus, taking care of your hands becomes extremely important.
A simple way to take care of your hands is by washing them frequently. You should wash your hands before and after you eat, after handling garbage, going to the toilet, touching an animal, or sneezing.
For parents, it’s also important to wash your hands after you change your baby’s nappy.
You can use the five-step method of washing hands prescribed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You can use some scented alcohol-based soaps for this.
Skin is the largest organ of the human body – protecting us against chemicals, pathogens, etc. Therefore, it’s essential for us to keep our skin healthy, which can be done by removing dead cells, dirt, etc.
But it doesn’t end there. Our skin needs a healthy amount of natural fats and oils to be healthy.
Our skin needs to have a combination of moisture and lipids to protect against different disease-carrying pathogens.
It also needs its resident microbes to be healthy to fight off any disease-causing pathogens and stop them from multiplying.
You can use several natural and organic body nourishment products, creams, and lotions to moisturise your skin and keep it healthy.

Effects of poor body hygiene

While better hygiene can mitigate these problems, poor body hygiene only exacerbates these conditions. Some minor problems include body odour or greasy skin.
Poor personal hygiene, such as not washing your hands frequently, can help transmit germs from your hand to your mouth or eyes.
A lesser serious variety of diseases can cause stomach viruses and pink eye. But more serious problems, such as Covied-19, are much more likely to affect you if you don’t sanitise your hands after touching foreign objects.
Plaque build-up and other teeth issues, which arise due to negligence of dental hygiene, are even considered risk factors for some severe health issues such as heart disease.
Poor body hygiene is also often related to lower self-esteem. This may make you more prone to some mental health issues. Therefore, better hygiene can be used to give your confidence a boost and instill a sense of pride in you.
Other more common problems can arise because of bad body hygiene. These include, but are not limited to, scabies, pubic lice, head lice, body lice, athlete’s foot, pinworms, etc.
These can be mitigated by maintaining a proper system of hygiene.
Personal hygiene is extremely important and should not be neglected whatsoever. Since we’re coming out of a difficult time, we need to maintain a hygiene routine.
There are plenty of ways and strategies which could help you develop your own routine.
You can set reminders for small things, such as drinking water, brushing your teeth, showering, and all sorts of other things.
You can also use physical reminders in your washroom or kitchen to remind you to wash your hands after using the washroom or preparing food. This can improve your memory and, after a while, these things will become second nature.
