Hiking essentials – your packing checklist

If you want to tune out from hectic life and return to your roots, there’s nothing better than hiking!

It helps you reconnect with nature and find pleasure in the small things in life.

Regardless of your experience, hiking is for everyone. You just need to find the right kind of trail for yourself.

That said, there are a few essentials that you might need on your trip.

Carry water to quench your thirst

The most important thing that you will need to carry for a hike is water. As a rule of thumb, you should pack 1 litre of water for every hour that you plan on hiking.

Water might be heavy to carry but it is absolutely essential.

If you’re hiking during hot summer days,  it’s recommended to carry more so that you fend off dehydration.

This will enable you to move comfortably on the trail and not get so tired.

You can even think of carrying a water filter if you know that you will find water on the way.

Water sources such as streams should be searched for beforehand so that you know where to fill up water.

Get some munchies for the way

We can definitely say that snacks are the best part of hiking.

If you want to maintain your energy on the trail, it is important to consume at least 200 calories per hour.

The best food to go for is non-perishable items such as trail mix.

Your food should also be nutrient-dense instead of processed foods that do not give you as much energy.

Think granola, peanut butter, and some dried fruit.

Try to get food that will not be crushed inside your backpack.

You can pack whatever you want to eat, but make sure you do eat from time to time.

First aid kit is always mandatory

It’s very easy to fall down or get hurt on hikes, even if it is a beginner’s trail.

You should make sure that at least one person in the group packs a good first aid kit so that you don’t have to rush back in your time of need.

Pack items such as bandages, band-aids, manuka honey for dressing, some medications such as antibiotics, and even pain medication.

Even if you twist your ankle, you can use an elastic band to help compress the ankle.

Essential layers for any weather

It’s important to be one step ahead of the weather.

Cotton is not a good option for hiking since it absorbs sweat but doesn’t dry easily.

Clothes that are moisture-wicking and comfortable should be preferred.

Yoga pants and an athletic t-shirt would be perfect if you are hiking in the heat, but don’t forget sun protection, or you might get a bad case of sunburn.

Wear comfortable shoes that you can move around in. Pack extra clothing even if you are sure that you won’t need it.
